There are some anglers who think that fishing is for the men. Well I am here to prove them wrong. Fishing is for women too, and perhaps may even be better at it as I found out during a trip to Whelford Pools in May 2001.
I have been fishing with my Dad since I was at primary school. He is a match angler and used to take me with him on pleasure trips and matches. On pleasure trips I was allowed my own rod and used to catch a lot of roach and rudd, sometimes even beating him. On one occasion I caught 64 fish, two of a good size, and my brother only caught 3. It was then that I decided that I could do this. Loos can be a bit tricky sometimes, but it doesn't bother me. With a comfy bedchair and bivvy, I'm happy.Nowadays I fish with my boyfriend Jon, and he has encouraged me to take up carp fishing. The Whelford trip was my first proper carp trip, a ten day session where I was to prove my point.
Other anglers came and went during the week, and they all wanted to know one thing. Who is the girl over there catching all the fish? They were blanking, Jon was…. Well catching one or two, including a rat! Meanwhile, I was bagging up.

The week got off to a good start on the second day, Jon and his Dad had a carp and I needed to catch up fast, so here it is, a nice fish of 14lb 8oz. |

The weather was abysmal during the week and the carp just weren’t having it. So I left the others standing by filling in with a tench. |
